Agriculture
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) has been used in agriculture and farming for decades. Because HOCl is pH neutral, it is commonly used for crop control during both pre- and post-harvest. By dramatically improving post-harvest rot, it contributes to larger crop yield as spoilage is now vastly reduced.
HOCl is a biodegradable natural solution that is non-flammable and chemical free. And by disinfecting surfaces, the pathogens that affect plants’ health and vitality makes the spread of the diseases and pathogens far less likely.
The USDA clarified that HOCl is appropriate for organic production and handling, and that it can be used as a no-rinse disinfectant on fruit and vegetables.
A number of studies have demonstrated the strong antibacterial activity of HOCl water against foodborne pathogens on raw agricultural products and food contact surfaces, stating HOCl is an advantageous alternative to other chlorine disinfectants and sanitizers.
Indoor Grow
HOCl quickly kills a variety of fungi and shows promise as a broad-spectrum contact fungicide for control of foliar diseases of greenhouse-grown ornamentals.
An independent review of HOCl in the November 2021 Grozine Publication found that HOCl can be used in irrigation and hydroponic applications, to treat indoor growth surfaces and apparatus, and used as a foliar spray. Their research found visible and measurable differences in:
- BioFilm reduction
- Less mineral salt build up
- Increased root health
- Faster growth rates
- Less incidence of related pests
- Easier crop turn overs
- HOCl is a safe and effective way to disinfect both the water and the plant roots in a hydroponic system, reducing the risk of diseases and pests.
- HOCl is a powerful disinfectant that can kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi without harming the plants.
- It is a natural, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly alternative to other disinfectants such as bleach or hydrogen peroxide.
- When added to the nutrient solution, HOCl provides additional protection against harmful pathogens that can damage the plants and reduce their growth.
- Using HOCl as a water sterilizer reduces the need for expensive and energy-intensive systems such as UV sterilization or ozonation.
- It is a cost-effective and simple way to maintain a healthy hydroponic system and ensure optimal plant growth.
Our hypochlorous solutions are environmentally friendly and yet incredibly impactful against the microorganisms that growers are most anxious to eradicate from their environments.
